In my home we have a little saying on the wall by Robert Brault that reads, “Enjoy the little things in life . . . . for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.”

Normally, my posts have been something I researched and found some information on, but this post I am going to do something a little different. I’m just going to write down a few thoughts that I have.

That saying is so very true. I just recently had the opportunity to take my family to Disneyland last week. I have 3 little boys ages 5, 3 and 5 months. They are a handful, but loads of fun! It was so nice to slow down a bit and spend a lot of time with them and my wife. It was great to do some things that they wanted to do. Sometimes it is so easy for me to get wrapped up in my work, that I don’t take the needed time to spend with my family. All it takes is playing ball, trucks, or jumping on the tramp to put a big smile on my boys’ face.

Work will always be there, but my family growing up years won’t. If time is of the essence, then spending time with loved ones is priceless. I think that if people really paid close attention to the little things in life, especially if those little things are their children, quality time with their spouse (which in my case would be a back rub for my wife), or other loved ones you will find the greatest happiness and success that life can ever bring you. That is what it’s all about.

Do you have a clear, definitive goal you would like to accomplish? Do you have it written down? Life will go too fast and pass you by, if you don’t have something worth while that you are shooting for. This is your life. Are you where you’d like to be? (That could very well be the lyrics to a song by Switchfoot)

Goals help give us direction and a clear cut idea of what we want out of life. Let me give you some statistics. A study was done on the Harvard Business School graduates in 1964. 5% of them wrote down their goals and what they wanted to accomplish. 95% of them that wrote down their goals were able to accomplish everything they wrote down within 20 years. Amazing stuff!

Here are six tips to help you finally accomplish those goals you’ve always wanted to get done.

Write Your Goals down. (This is an absolute must. Don’t do step #2 if you haven’t written them down)

Set a deadline. (Let’s face it, if you don’t have a deadline, then your goal might as well be dead, because chances are . . . you’re not going to get it done.)

Add details and be very descriptive of what you want. (This will prove to be invaluable as you do the next step.)

Review your Goals. (Don’t go through the 3 steps and then shove them in a drawer. You must have them fresh in your mind.)

Create a Plan of Action. (KNOW WHAT YOU GOTTA DO!)

MAKE IT HAPPEN!! (You already know what you want, now go get it!)

So there it is. Goals are a huge part of achieving success. If you don’t know where you are going, then it doesn’t really matter where you end up. Goals give you a purpose and a path. Use it, do it, live it!

Great quote on goals and always taking it to the next level! What’s you’re next level? (Leave a comment and let me know)

“Growing up in my career, I always fix my goals very high, and every time I achieve one of my [goals], I fix another goal to reach. It’s important as a martial artist [never to be] satisfied because otherwise there is no point to keep doing what you’re doing.” – George St.Pierre – UFC Champion

Your body and how you feel plays a huge role in your success. What could you accomplish if you had more energy and felt in sync with your body? Your body is one of the most important assets to take care of. Here is a very interesting quote that covers that very topic.

To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. ~Buddha

www.freedigitalphotos.net

Have you ever thought of keeping your body in good health as your duty? The definition of duty is something that one is expected or required to do by moral or legal obligation. This definitely puts it in a different perspective and places a major responsibility to understand and take the necessary steps to keep your body healthy.

Your body is truly an amazing creation. It functions and moves in ways that even the most advanced technology cannot duplicate. Your body has the ability to reproduce, heal itself, and go through extreme physical stress. I find it amazing that there are many people that do not know the inner workings of their very own body.

Here are 6 super useful tips on understanding your body and how to keep it healthy:

1. Optimal Breathing: More oxygen in your system can help you relax and reduce stress, improve your skin tone, sleep better, as well as losing inches and weight. Most people only use 20% of their lungs capacity. Oxygen is used in so many of your cellular functions including eliminating waste, strengthening your immune system and burning fat. To increase the amount of oxygen your body needs try taking 5 minutes a day to breathe long, deep, and controlled breathes. Another way to increase your oxygen is to drink more H2O. Exercise is another way to increase oxygen flow.

2. Nutrition: Have you ever felt tired, sluggish, or gross after a big heavy meal? Nutrition plays a huge role in keeping your body healthy and giving it the nutrients it needs to function properly. One of the biggest tips is to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables (at least 5 servings a day). Eat lean protein such as fish, chicken, egg whites, lean beef, pork, and certain beans. Carbohydrates are an important part of any diet, because they provide your body energy. Consume complex carbs like sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole wheat bread, pasta, oatmeal, and bran. Remember portions, portions, portions. Stay away from fried foods, high fat foods and sugar (especially high fructose corn syrup).

3. Strength Training: There are huge benefits of strength training which includes raising your basal metabolism, strengthens your bones, improves posture, builds and tones muscles, increases your energy, improves muscular endurance, helps your digestive system, and the list goes on and on. There are many different types of strength training techniques you can use like free weights, machines, or your own body weight. The first and foremost thing you gotta do is to start. It doesn’t matter if you struggle taking in your gallon of milk from your car, you need to start somewhere. Remember to consult a physician and to learn proper lifting techniques. Do different exercises that work different muscles like a pushing (i.e. chest press, shoulder press) and a pulling (i.e. back row, lat pull down) action. Do both types to develop all of your muscles.

4. Cardio Training: The benefits of cardio training are amazing as well. It improves the condition of your heart, also increases your metabolism, improves your mood, can help control diabetes, helps lose body fat, and reduces blood pressure to name a few. Remember again to consult a physician about starting a cardio program. Consider the frequency (2-3 days per week), the duration (20 – 60 minutes) and the intensity (heart rate) when designing your personal cardio program. You will want to get your heart rate in a good “target” zone. To figure your maximum heart rate take 220 – your age = Maximum Heart Rate. The lower end of intensity is 55% – 65% of your max heart rate. The highest you will ever want to go is 90% of your max. Even if it’s only a 10 minute walk, your heart and body will thank you. Keep doing that and build up!

5. Sleep: For a healthy body and mind your body needs adequate sleep. This is how your body recharges and restores itself. If you can do the 4 steps above on a consistent basis, you will have much better restful nights. Usually an average of 7 – 8 hours is needed per night to get the most benefit your body needs. This is an important step to follow, so rest up!

6. Knowing Your Body: To know what makes you feel good and how to keep healthy is priceless. Nobody knows your body better than you do. It is important to increase your knowledge of what it takes for you to obtain your optimal health and to understand the functioning of your body. I have found a great site that teaches you the inner workings of your body. Check it out here: http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/health-and-human-body/human-body/ If knowledge is power then learning about your own body can be extremely powerful for you.

I hope these 6 steps give you some good information on becoming the most healthy and fit you have ever been. In doing so it will also help you achieve and do more than you’ve ever done. Get started! Keep it going and the future is what you make it!

I recently watched a very good movie with Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman called Invictus. There are a few things that struck me in this movie. The foremost thing that I took away from this movie was the reference to the poem where the title of the movie comes from: Invictus by William Henley (I will post the poem and comment on it in a bit), one of the other things I liked watching was the vision and leadership qualities that Nelson Mandela displayed in the movie played by Mr. Freeman.

It is also interesting to see the underdog be victorious not only with the rugby team but in the life of Nelson Mandela. I find that in life, if one can go through pain and trials and be able to learn from those experiences, they are so much stronger and better for it. That brings us into a good introduction to the poem.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley

I love this poem. I believe this is to be true for everyone, because my personal thoughts are that everyone living on this great planet will in some way or another “be covered by a black night, and in a place of wrath and tears.” But with your “unconquerable soul”, no matter what happens you ARE “the master of your fate” and you ARE “the captain of your soul. “

You might not be able to control the environment which you are in or some of the events that will happen to you but, you are the only one that can control your thoughts, your attitude, and your actions. When it seems like the world is falling down on your shoulders and darkness surrounds you with no way out remember, you are capable of being the master and the captain of you.

The Latin meaning of Invictus means unconquerable. What will you do today to be unconquerable in achieving your dreams?

“Success is not something you pursue. Success is something you become” – Jim Rohn. After reading this quote it really made me think about my meaning of success. Have you ever thought that you aren’t successful until you have obtained A, B, or C (i.e. BMW, 10,000 sq ft house, or vacation in Fiji)?

It’s like getting to the top of a mountain. There a couple of ways to do this. You can take a helicopter to the top or you can climb to the top. Now, of these two ways which one pursued success and which one actually became success? Who benefits the most?

What happens when your helicopter pilot gets sick, your helicopter bites the dust, or you don’t have the funds to use the helicopter? Will you be successful in reaching the top? Probably not. Now compare that to conditioning yourself, training, having the proper equipment, and having a plan or guide. If you are able to do those steps and put in the necessary effort, I say you have become success. You would be able to climb mountain after mountain. You have more control, have done what it takes and that is a true champion.

Some people have obtained their” success” by chance or from others. If they lost it all, would they have the ability to create it again? I highly doubt it. That is why learning and becoming success gives an individual power.

If you can learn the attitude, the skills, the determination, the mindset, the work ethic, the actions, then you have become successful and will continue to achieve whatever you desire.

Everyone on planet Earth has had a crappy day. I was talking to a colleague of mine about how crappy my day was going. After talking awhile I thought to myself, ya know it is really easy to complain, to look at the crappy things that life brings, and to get discouraged of how screwed up things can actually be. But the only thing I can really do is to keep doing the best I know how and keep plugg’n along. It takes a very good attitude and great character to see the good things in life, shrug the crap off, step higher, and move forward. A lot easier said than done, right?

Well hopefully some of these tips help with having the determination to enjoy things and keep moving forward:

1. Think of 5 things you are totally grateful for.

(this helps get you mind focusing on the good, rather than dwelling on the crap)

2. Think of one good thing you’ve done today.

(give yourself credit, you have the ability to make a difference and sometimes other people rely on you)

3. Don’t listen to the negative voice in your head.

(It will always be there saying negative thoughts and one of the greatest things you can accomplish in life is controlling that little voice)

4. Do something good for someone else.

(This will bring you some cheer and pick me up, guaranteed)

5. Realize that the little engine that could was going through a hard time but made it over the mountain, and by golly you can too!

(Life is going to be hard, but with persistence, and a good attitude you can do anything you set your mind to.)

I know this is not a solve all solution, but hopefully it helps. Like I said it is easy to get down on yourself, but it is sure worth it to overcome those negative thoughts and feelings, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward. You do that and life will continually get better and better!
